Last month, Beacon Street held its first evacuation drill of the year. Below are some evacuation tips—both general and those highlighted during the drill—to keep in mind when the alarm goes off.
Use every stairwell and exit available to you. In an emergency, distance yourself from the threat as quickly as possible. Unless signage indicates that a staircase or door is unsafe, use whatever will get you outside the fastest.
Find a safe area. We rarely know exactly what we’re dealing with when the alarm goes off. Always move away from the building immediately, and don’t forget other hazards–stay on the sidewalk and out of the street and bike lane.
Communicate disabilities to CAPA or HR. If you think you’d need assistance—temporary or long term—during an evacuation, reach out to CAPA or HR. They’ll work with you and Operations to create a personal evacuation plan that ensures you get the support you need.
Don’t gather your belongings unless instructed. Your life is more important than your umbrella. Leave your items and evacuate as soon as the alarm sounds.
